A new Marholmen ready to welcome visitors

From a conference center to an archipelago destination.

After several years of intensive development toward the goal of becoming a natural year-round destination, a new Marholmen will Marholmen this summer. In June, the doors will open following the largest phase of construction—the newly renovated main building. Here, guests will find a brand-new lobby with spacious social areas and a new restaurant & bar. In mid-July, the newly renovated Marholmen will open. All work has been carried out with care and with the guest experience in mind.

In May 2025, work began on the largest phase of Marholmen’s development plan: an extensive renovation and expansion of the main building, the heart of the island. It has been four decades since Kommunal took over the island, and now Marholmen is Marholmen for another 40 years of modern solutions and guest experiences.

“With all the progress we’ve made here in recent years, we’re now ready for Marholmen its full potential and realize our vision—to become Sweden’s best archipelago destination with cuisine worth the detour. We’re now looking forward to writing the next chapter in our long and wonderful history,” says Fredrik Utheim, CEO of Marholmen.

The renovation was carried out with the aim of preserving and highlighting Marholmen’s long history, and was completed in several phases to ensure that operations could continue uninterrupted. Sustainability has been a central theme throughout the project, and Marholmen implemented both large-scale and smaller initiatives to contribute to a circular economy and reduce its environmental impact.

• The completely renovated and expanded Hermans Veranda, Dining Room & Bar is now open, and the kitchen has been redesigned to enhance the dining experience across the entire island year-round.

• In June, the doors will open to the new lobby, which has been expanded by several hundred square meters and will provide more space for friends, families, and colleagues to socialize—something that was previously lacking.

• New gardens are being established on the island to grow herbs, vegetables, and other edible produce for the restaurant. The kitchen’s compost is also being put to good use there.

• By mid-July, Marholmen will be ready to welcome visitors following a complete renovation of its facilities, the addition of a new infinity pool, and an expanded range of services—an experience that complements the island’s other aquatic attractions perfectly.

Facts – A Year of Change

Hermans Veranda, Dining Room & Bar – a new dining experience
Earlier this year, Hermans opened its doors—a brand-new restaurant that reflects Marholmen’s rich history and rural surroundings. Here, the new, larger spaces work together to provide a dining experience for both small, private gatherings and larger conference groups. Another new feature is that the bar now offers a light bar menu in addition to drinks.

The brand-new kitchen is designed to offer a variety of dining experiences, not only in the restaurant but throughout the island and all year round. The focus has been on details that aren’t immediately visible but make a big difference—both for the staff’s work environment and efficiency—as well as on sustainable solutions such as new ventilation, eco-friendly grease traps, and a composting machine.

Fun fact: The restaurant is named after Herman Lindqvist, who served as president of the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO) in the early 1900s, when parts of the island were donated to the LO by its then-owners, Nils and Hanna Berg.

From Table to Flower Meadow and Kitchen Garden
Food waste from the new kitchen is now being converted into topsoil used for flower cultivation in Beda’s flower meadow, making the facility self-sufficient in cut flowers year-round. The soil is also used for the new kitchen garden, which is being established to supply the kitchen with herbs and vegetables. As a complement, a larger vegetable garden is also being established just a stone’s throw from the island, where vegetables such as fennel, pointed cabbage, and onions are grown by the same team that tends the gardens and vegetation on Marholmen.

Common social areas (completion in June)
The main building will gain a total of 600 new square meters of common social areas featuring inviting seating areas, fireplaces, a lobby bar to complement Hermans Bar, and comfortable lounge spaces for socializing. This major change will enable year-round socializing, even between meals and activities.

Marholmen – one of many bathing options (opening in mid-July)
Marholmen is located in the main building and is undergoing a complete renovation, including the addition of an infinity pool with ocean views, infrared chairs, and foot baths. In addition, the range of services will be expanded and a more extensive spa menu will be introduced.

Marholmen is Marholmen to choose a new booking platform

A new Swedish all-in-one system for hotels, conference centers, and destinations is now being launched on the market. The Omnis system is being developed by the startup Reinvented Hospitality AB and is intended to serve as an operating system for highly complex operations. Omnis challenges today’s patchwork of systems by offering a unified platform for all core aspects of the business—such as operations, sales, finance, and human resources—in a single tool, built from within the industry, for the industry.

Marholmen, one of Sweden’s best-known destinations with a wide range of diverse activities, is the first to choose Omnis.

“For a long time, we’ve been missing a modern system that understands the needs of an organization with many target groups and a wide range of offerings. We’ve evaluated everything on the market, but existing systems struggle to meet our needs, and we’ve often been forced to make compromises. Now that we are in a phase where we are implementing several major changes in our operations, it feels especially important to be involved in developing this exciting digital solution together with Reinvented Hospitality.”
says Fredrik Utheim, CEO of Marholmen.

The launch comes at a time when the need for more modern systems has accelerated. The entire industry is under pressure from declining profitability, while demands for flexibility and efficient operations are on the rise. As a result, there has been significant interest even before the launch, and about ten facilities are now ready to implement Omnis in the coming months.

The system is first being developed and tested in a live environment at Riddersvik Herrgård, which is owned by the founders, before its features are further validated at Fagerudd Konferens in Enköping and Hotell Gässlingen in Skanör Falsterbo. The development is backed by an experienced and long-term investor group, which also includes the facilities participating in the testing. Reinvented Hospitality has also been granted development funding from Almi, which supports innovation projects focused on sustainable growth and transition.

Omnis was developed by Reinvented Hospitality based on the insight that the conference market is one of the least digitized segments of the hospitality industry. The platform addresses the practical challenges that impact day-to-day operations, from resource planning and staffing to guest experience and real-time profitability management. The goal is to give venues greater control, improved delivery capabilities, and enhanced competitiveness.

“With Omnis, we want to make it easier to run hotels, meeting facilities, and complex destinations with quality and profitability. The system functions as an operating system for the entire business and is built around how operations actually work, not how previous generations of booking systems assumed they worked,” says Marcus Holmgren, co-founder of Reinvented Hospitality.

Several facilities are now preparing to implement Omnis, and the system will be rolled out gradually over the coming months. Facilities that wish to follow developments or learn from the experiences of the first installations can contact Reinvented Hospitality.

About Omnis, a system built from within the industry

Omnis was developed by the engineering duo Marcus Holmgren and Torgil Zechel, who have been working together on technical innovation for over 20 years. During the pandemic, the digital weaknesses of the hospitality industry became apparent. The systems in use were, in practice, semi-digital versions of old ways of working, with limited ability to adapt as conditions changed from day to day, and even less so to rapid shifts or new business models.

As new owners of a conference center, the founders faced these challenges in their own business, and the need for a system capable of managing operations, guest services, and profitability even under rapidly changing conditions became clear. That realization was the starting point for Omnis—an operating system developed to meet the industry’s demands, both in everyday operations and in times of crisis.

In 2023, Omnis was awarded the “Innovation of the Year” prize by Svenska Möten, with Visita’s chairman Jonas Siljehammar serving on the jury.

The development of Omnis has received funding from Almi, a state-owned organization that provides financing to small and medium-sized enterprises with a focus on sustainable growth and transformation in the Swedish business sector.

Marholmen is enhancing the guest experience with an extensive renovation and expansion.

In May 2025, the archipelago destination Marholmen in Roslagen, just outside Norrtälje, will begin a significant renovation and extension of its main building. This major investment aims to enhance the guest experience, improve the staff's working environment, and strengthen Marholmen's position as a year-round destination. The work is expected to be completed by spring 2026.

“This initiative will take Marholmen to new heights,” says Fredrik Utheim, CEO of Marholmen. “Our goal is to offer all our guests an even better stay, while also protecting our unique environment and history and preserving the island for future generations.”

The planned renovation includes several key areas:

  • New Main Entrance and Lobby: The main entrance is being moved to create a more welcoming first impression. The new lobby will offer spacious areas with comfortable seating and a large fireplace to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
  • Modern Kitchen: Our current kitchen is being replaced with a state-of-the-art and sustainable facility, designed to efficiently handle the increasing number of guests and ensure the highest quality dining experiences.
  • Renovated restaurant and bar: These areas are being rebuilt to offer an improved guest experience and a customized work environment, focusing on both individual visitors and larger groups.
  • Updated Spa: The spa facility is undergoing a complete renovation to create an optimal spa experience.
  • Improved building systems: New ventilation systems and other technical equipment are being installed to ensure sustainable and energy-efficient operation.

This development is part of Marholmen's long-term strategy and vision to become Sweden's leading year-round archipelago destination and a food destination worth a detour. By upgrading facilities and implementing modern technology, Marholmen aims to preserve the unique archipelago environment for future generations.

During the renovation, we're carefully planning the construction work to keep disruptions for our guests to a minimum. Stays in cabins, villas, glamping tents, pitches, or Villa Berg won't be affected at all, and guests in the main building's hotel rooms will experience very little disturbance. All meals will be served at the historic Grosshandlartorget, and a new summer restaurant, a natural gathering spot, will open by summer. While the spa is being renovated, guests can enjoy the 7° Bath & Sauna natural bathing experience, where selected spa treatments will still be available.

“These improvements will help us meet our guests' needs even better and work smarter in many ways. It also gives us a chance to review our entire offering and create new and exciting experiences, especially when it comes to food and drinks. We're really looking forward to welcoming both new and returning guests to an even better Marholmen,” Fredrik concludes.

Winter Bath and sauna are life – do you choose a hot or cold experience?

Our guests' four favorites – the Bath experience is never more than a stone's throw away

The Bath experience at Marholmen is always within reach, and in winter, it's extra special. Whether you prefer an icy dip in a hole in the ice or warm outdoor baths, Marholmen has a Bath experience for you. Here are our guests' four favorites – which one will you choose?

Marholmen in the Roslagen archipelago is surrounded by water, and baths are something to enjoy all year round, both outdoors and indoors. Here are four winter favorites among Marholmen's visitors.

HOT – hot tub & outdoor bath
Enjoy a 42°C warm bath, with the experience intensified by the cold, crisp air above the surface. Hot tubs are available at Badholmen, and outdoor baths are included in 7° Bath & Sauna.

WARM – Marholmen
A 38°C outdoor hot spring and an indoor hot tub with a comfortable air temperature. At Mareld Spa, the temperature is just right both in and above the water.

COLD – cold Bath with sauna
7°C. The sea is always cold, but you'll feel the chill less if you alternate cold dips with a hot sauna. Feel free to repeat this several times. Sauna baths are available at Badholmen and 7° Bath & Sauna.

BRRRR – Ice Hole
2°C. Take a winter dip in an ice hole from one of Marholmen's jetties. For an extra chilly experience, skip the towel and just shake yourself dry and warm.

Marholmen launches the Bath Hotel Villa Berg, premiering on June 27th

At the new Bathhotellet Villa Berg, you'll find all the charm and comfort you could wish for. This unique villa was originally completed in 1915 and served as a holiday home for the working class. The villa has now undergone a careful renovation, and when Bathhotellet Villa Berg opens its doors this summer, it will be possible for individual guests to stay in the villa for the first time in almost 100 years.

– Villa Berg is our absolute most unique accommodation, unlike anything you'll find elsewhere. The villa is a flexible oasis with all the amenities you could wish for. Here, you'll find top-notch food and drinks, and the beautiful archipelago nature right outside your door, says Marholmen's CEO Fredrik Utheim.

As a guest, you can choose between a mini-suite, ten double rooms, and two single rooms, all with private bathrooms. The villa offers generous spaces for socializing, and many activities are available in the beautiful archipelago nature. When booking the Bath Hotel, half board is always included; a 4-course dinner prepared by the Bath Hotel's own kitchen team under the guidance of the food creators at Loén, and when you wake up, a generous breakfast awaits.

– Here with us, the ingredients and the guest are our main focus. We prepare food in a familiar and genuine way, and the dishes are playful and innovative, says Nichlas Holmquist at Loén.

Villa Berg was built in 1915 and is a listed Art Nouveau villa. This grand villa was completely renovated in 2024 and is rented out in its entirety for larger groups, but from 2025, the villa will transform into a Bath hotel between June 27th and August 10th.

Marholmen's Alexander won CopperSkillet 2025!

When the Swedish final of the Copper Skillet cooking competition was held at Sergel HUB on March 24th, our very own Alexander Lundin took home the victory in the senior class. Copper Skillet is a global competition for chefs working at conference facilities affiliated with IACC, the International Association of Conference Centers. The winners will now compete in the European final, which takes place in October. The winners from there will advance to the world final in spring 2026.

Svenska Möten, together with Nores, hosted the Swedish final of Copper Skillet, where 16 chefs from conference facilities across Sweden competed. The challenge was to create a main course suitable for a conference setting under time pressure, using ingredients from a pantry the chefs knew about beforehand, plus a secret basket of ingredients revealed on the spot. The chefs had 15 minutes to familiarize themselves with the secret ingredients and plan their dish. After that, they had 30 minutes to prepare the dish before presenting it to the jury.

– I am very impressed by, not just the winners, but all the chefs who participated in the competition. Together, they show that the food at Swedish conference facilities is of an incredibly high standard, says Michael Schüller, CEO of Svenska Möten.

Alexander Lundin won with the dish pike-perch with fried cheese, steamed asparagus, butter-fried morels, and wild garlic, served with potatoes tossed in butter sauce with morels and spinach.

Here's what the jury said:
”A truly professional creation where every detail was given full attention. Using simple ingredients, the winner managed to bring out maximum flavour in every single component, presenting it beautifully and modernly. A dish in perfect balance.”

The jury consisted of the renowned chefs Paul Svensson, Pontus Wellén, and Andreas Askling. The criteria assessed by the jury included how well the competition task was performed, the presentation, craftsmanship, texture, balance between flavor combinations, the hygiene standard of the workstation, and food waste.

In the junior class, Simon Cardenas from Hotel Kristina won.
