The heritage-listed Villa Berg holds a special place in our hearts here at Marholmen. It's named after the merchant Nils Berg and was designed in a typical Art Nouveau style from the early 1900s, an architectural form inspired by nature's irregular and organic shapes. The architecture blends in beautifully with the island's rich vegetation, which stretches down to the shoreline and jetty.
"Liquor may not be carried or consumed in the homes. Smoking and playing cards in the halls and corridors of the homes is strongly discouraged". These were the rules for those who used to visit the Holiday Home. But there were many other things to do. Bathing, fishing, playing board games, playing the guitar, finger-hooking, or reading. The holiday home had its own library where guests could borrow books.
The Holiday Home opened in 1915. It was a place where workers and their families could stay and eat affordably. We welcomed drivers, tailors, engravers, typographers, stokers, railway workers, municipal employees, and even a few ombudsmen. The Holiday Home saw its peak in the 1940s, after two weeks of vacation became law. In the summer of 1940, there were 240 adults and 32 children staying here. Two decades later, the Holiday Home had less than half that number of guests.
The Holiday Home was designed by architect Carl Alfred Danielsson-Bååk, who also designed Grosshandlargården and Strandpaviljongen. The villa was restored in the early 90s and painted in its original colors. In 2022-2023, the villa's exterior was carefully restored to its former glory once again.
October 2024 marks the next chapter in the villa's history, as it reopened with a new concept after a careful and respectful renovation. Villa Berg's distinctive architecture, interior design, atmosphere, and surroundings, deeply rooted in Swedish working-class history, have been preserved during the gentle renovation. The color palette features the villa's original colors, and the interior is a mix of reused furniture from its heyday and timeless design classics.
Welcome to be a part of a new chapter in Villa Berg's incredible history.
