Sjöstugan was already on the map in 1879. In the past, the aroma of freshly baked loaves and buns came from here. Bread for Marholmen's guests was baked in the oven that is still here today. During the first half of the 20th century, LO's part of the island housed the Holiday Home for Working Families, the Holiday Home for Women, and the Retreat for 'less affluent working wives and female workers.'
In 1917, those responsible for the Retreat summarized the past summer:
"Most guests have gained weight and regained health and strength." The loaves and buns had done their job.
Guests at the retreat stayed two per room. The rooms were equipped with two beds, four blankets, two bedside rugs, three chairs, a tray with two glasses and a carafe, a washstand with a washbasin set, a chamber pot, a chest of drawers, a soapstone stove, a mirror, four cloths, two white pique bedspreads, a vase, a hanging lamp, a floor cloth, and a dust cloth.
In the big hall, you'd find books, board games, an organ, and a hammock. By the front door, there was a wall mirror and a clothes brush, so you could tidy yourself up before heading out.
