Marholmen – a hundred years of hotel, Bath, and meetings in the Roslagen archipelago.

Here, our marketing manager Bibi Rydbacken tells journalist Oliver Hugemark about Marholmen during an interview for Scan Magazine in summer 2023.

1. Tell us about your origins and history, as well as memorable milestones on your journey.

People have bathed, laughed, rested, grown, met, and enjoyed Marholmen for over a hundred years, and we have a beautiful heritage to look after.

In 1913, Nils & Hanna Berg donated part of the island to the labor movement (LO) to establish a retreat and a school for women working in factories. The school's first principal was Natanael Beskow, who was married to the famous children's book author Elsa. During the summers, they lived on Marholmen and stood together on the pier to welcome the new students to the island. You can sense inspiration from Marholmen in some of Elsa's fairy tales.

Today, Marholmen is owned and developed by the Swedish Municipal Workers' Union, and we are convinced that we at Marholmen have the opportunity to contribute to a better society.

2. Tell us about your values, passion, sources of inspiration, and what drives you and your employees?

Marholmen isn't a Mediterranean resort. It's an island nestled in Swedish nature. Here, every season feels like its own special celebration, and our guests enjoy a stay that truly embraces everything an island in Roslagen has to offer – our food, our history, our culture, and our unique way of life.

The warm atmosphere and the genuine, thoughtful service make everyone feel at home. We want our guests to leave feeling like they've had a wonderful experience they'll want to return to and share with others.

3. Tell us about the relationship you and your business have with the Roslagen archipelago?

In classical mythology, islands are where the gods live. Everyone is welcome to Marholmen. The bridge to Marholmen is like a gateway to another world, embraced by water, offering unique experiences, adventures, and memories for life.

At Marholmen, you get the chance to escape the city's hustle and bustle and instead embrace the peace and beauty of the surrounding nature.

4. What's unique about staying with us?

I often meet guests who spent their summer holidays at Marholmen as children and continue the tradition by coming back again and again with their own kids. Many guests who come here for a kickoff or conference return with family and friends – and vice versa! I think it's because of the relaxed atmosphere, the beautiful nature, the delicious food, and the fact that there's always something new to discover and do, as we're a place that's constantly evolving.

5. What are the most popular activities and excursions at the hotel and on the island?

Bath, paddling, boat trips, and glamping on rafts moored by Rackaren island are just a few of the many activities available on the island. All year round, you can enjoy Mareld Spa with light therapy, or grab a 'Kolbulle' (a traditional Swedish pancake) cooked over an open fire at one of our barbecue spots. At Badholmen, you can try cold baths, sauna, and relax in our hot tubs. A new addition this autumn is the outdoor Bath 7° Bath & Sauna. For groups, there's also a wide range of activities that suit everyone, including challenging your colleagues on the 'Marholmen Masters' activity course – which is just as much fun as it sounds!

Retreat to Marholmen: a century of heritage in the heart of the Roslagen archipelago

6. What options do your guests have to customize their stay with you?

As a guest at Marholmen, you have many accommodation options. You can choose between staying in a comfortable hotel room with its own terrace or balcony, a charming Marholmen cottage, or a distinctive villa – there's something for everyone. For those seeking a unique experience, Marholmen also offers glamping tents on Rackaren island during the summer months, and pitches with electricity for those bringing their own accommodation year-round.

7. Finally, what's the best thing about Marholmen, simply put?

We're carrying on Nils and Hanna's legacy by making it possible for many to experience, meet, and relax at Marholmen. We hope and believe they would be proud of today's Marholmen and happy that everyone is still welcome here, more than a hundred years later.

The key to a successful conference

With Marholmen's unique history and magical surroundings, it's easy to find both inspiration and well-being. Together with the historic houses and the food, Roslagsön, with its bridge connection to the mainland, is a perfect setting for a successful conference just an hour from central Stockholm.

At Marholmen, we have about twenty meeting rooms that vary in size and design. How you want to use our venues can be tailored specifically for your group. We have meeting rooms that are perfect for everything from small groups to up to 180 participants.

Here on the island, there are overnight accommodation options for up to 368 people in several different types of lodging:

  • 50 comfortable and modern hotel rooms.
  • 40 scenic and newly renovated cottages, each featuring a large shared living room and kitchen, TV, bathroom, three bedrooms, a fireplace, and a sauna.
  • Seven villas of different sizes, with room for up to 14 people in the largest one
  • Five glamping tents during the summer season
  • 15 pitches for your own motorhomes or caravans

Leave your bedroom window ajar and fall asleep to nature's own music!

Our most important goal here at Marholmen is for you to feel right at home with us. Food is a big part of the experience, and our head chef does everything to offer a memorable taste experience. The menu is based on genuine Swedish flavors and is adapted seasonally.

Conference in Villa Berg – cozy and intimate

With its historic charm, beautiful surroundings, and all the modern features you could wish for, including hot tubs and a relaxation area, a conference at Villa Berg is truly something special.

The original style of the heritage-listed Villa Berg has largely been preserved, which means we can offer our guests a unique, high-quality conference facility with a historical setting. If your event or conference requires privacy and beautiful surroundings, Villa Berg is the obvious choice. Here you'll find an inspiring meeting environment that's well-equipped for modern conferences. You'll have the whole house to yourselves, and our project managers are always on hand.

In the house's basement vault, you'll find a wine cellar and a relaxation area with a sauna. Right next to the relaxation area, there's a hot tub that can be used all year round. If you fancy a swim, there's a private jetty right below.

Food and drink are a really important part of your stay at Villa Berg. You can enjoy your meals either in the villa or at the island's main building, which is just a short walk away.

Villa Berg has 14 bright bedrooms with modern standards. All rooms are tastefully decorated and modernly equipped with comfy beds, Wi-Fi, and a private bathroom. The fully tiled bathrooms have a shower and WC. The scenic view of the archipelago landscape with the sea bay outside is the icing on the cake.

Villa Berg is unlike anything else. It feels like stepping into a bygone era. You'll want to stay here.

Welcome!

Marholmen – complete relaxation surrounded by nature.

ARTICLE. North of Stockholm, right in the heart of Roslagen, you'll find the Marholmen hotel complex. It's its own island, a perfect destination for relaxation and rest, but also for amazing food and nature experiences.

The sun is streaming through the car window, tree buds are bursting outside, and the meadows along the road are coming back to life. It's early summer, hands down the best season! We have so much to look forward to: all the warm days, refreshing dips, summer evenings – everything! We also have a whole weekend at Marholmen ahead of us. The car zips over the bridge onto Marholmen. We've got a packed schedule to fit everything into this day we're spending here with some good friends.

First up on the schedule is a decathlon out in the forest. We'll hike over small bridges and boardwalks, eventually arriving at a small island where the decathlon will take place. We'll split into teams and compete against each other in well-designed and well-built events. This isn't your typical decathlon with dartboards and tennis balls thrown at cans. Here, we get to throw axes, shoot bows, saw down trees, and play ghost ball against each other. Super fun!

Right after the decathlon, we'll stop by the cold bath on our way back to the hotel. Here, with a view of the bay, we'll relax for a couple of hours with a cold bath, sauna, and hot tub. I immediately hear snapping sounds all around me. I quickly think, "something's breaking here." But then I turn around, and in unison, the whole group has popped open a beer each, and everyone is now heading into the spa bath.

After the cold bath, we head to our hotel rooms. We step into a hotel room with an amazing sea view. We change for dinner at the hotel, but before heading down, we sit on the balcony. We sit there in silence, watching the perfectly still water. We're interrupted by the phone ringing. We've completely lost track of time, and the others are now waiting for us in the restaurant.

We start dinner with an absolutely incredible cauliflower soup flavored with oysters, smoked cod, broad beans, and radish. We continue dinner with herb-roasted lamb sirloin with herb parmesan, wild garlic butter, haricots verts, red wine jus, and potato purée. Finally, we
enjoy a dessert consisting of puff pastry tarts with rhubarb, almond, pistachios, and vanilla cream. The evening concludes with conversations about life.

We wake up, pull back the curtains, and open the balcony door. Then we snuggle back into bed as the morning sun streams in, letting us gaze out over the water once more.

The breakfast buffet is really generous, with a huge selection of most things. I go "all in" on salmon, yogurt with berries and granola. We take our breakfast out into the morning sun.

Before we head home, we play a round on the adventure mini golf course. One person in our group is a real golfer, and even though it's just mini golf, he looks like he's on the PGA Tour! He has to inspect the course and take practice putts next to the ball. Okay, so maybe he'll win, but the difference between his score and ours isn't quite proportional to how seriously he takes the whole mini golf game. We pack up the car and leave Marholmen with some wonderful memories.

A completely unusual meeting day at Marholmen

Among all the groups that meet at Marholmen, few choose what we in the industry call a "Kalukamöte" – that's coffee, lunch, and coffee all in a four-walled conference room. Instead, almost everyone here takes the chance to explore the island, visit our spa, or enjoy the outdoors! And as we always say, there's no such thing as bad weather, so it's a great place to visit all year long.

You'll be welcomed to Marholmen by one of our professional project managers who has everything under control regarding all the details and today's schedule. After a morning meeting, which usually includes a refreshing coffee break and sometimes a walking meeting around the island, it's time to enjoy lunch around one of our Ofyr grills, where the chef grills today's lunch with the sea as an extra touch.

With renewed energy, you'll gather again for another couple of hours of meeting, before it's time for our project manager to make a new entrance. Because now it's time for a team-building activity! Among our most popular activities is Marholmen's Masters. And everyone who has seen the show understands what it's about – a competition where you use both your brain and brawn. Just one suggestion among many activities you can do here at Marholmen! See all possibilities here>>

During tonight's dinner, we'll announce the lucky winners! But before that, there's plenty of time to unwind at Mareld Spa, take a dip in the hot tub on Badholmen, hang out at the bar, or simply relax in your hotel room or one of our cozy cabins or villas here on the island. The next day, it's back to reality. But you'll be an even more connected group, refreshed by the crisp air on Marholmen and full of new shared memories.

Tips for team-building activities during your kickoff at Marholmen

A kickoff is one of your best tools for setting the tone for the company culture you want to define your business. The better relationships your employees have, the easier they understand, communicate, and read each other, which in turn creates space for increased creativity and faster problem-solving. Few things build a team as effectively as a fun and inclusive team-building activity. Here are our best tips for activities that build the team during your kickoff.

We're now seeing more and more reports that reinforce how crucial elements for successful businesses – like creativity, collaboration, and company culture – suffer when we can't meet in person during the coronavirus pandemic. The purpose of a kickoff isn't just to anchor the business or project goals with all employees or team members; it's also an opportunity for everyone to build and deepen relationships. Because when we build relationships, we also build that all-important team spirit and trust in our colleagues. That's the glue that makes us a 'we'. The better the relationships, the easier it becomes to understand and read each other, which in turn creates space for creativity and problem-solving. In short, a kickoff is a tool to set the tone for the company culture you want to define your business.

So far, so good. But picking an activity that everyone in the group will enjoy, can join in, and that fits your kickoff's goal can be tricky. What should you go for? How should you approach it?

Our tip is to take some time to choose the right activity that reflects the purpose and goals of your meeting. If the group doesn't know each other very well yet, the goal is probably to get to know each other. Consider making the activity some kind of collaborative exercise with plenty of time to talk and interact, like cooking together. If the group already knows each other well, maybe a more experience-focused activity, like a high ropes course, would help them bond and build trust within the team?

Remember not to arrange a half-day of rock climbing if there are people in the group with physical limitations or disabilities. Also, don't choose a quiz about Swedish pop songs during dinner if some of your colleagues didn't grow up in Sweden. And a karaoke night can be quite awkward if it's a new group that doesn't know each other well yet…

Here are some activities you can do here on Marholmen to get inspired:

  • Marholmen's Masters

Challenge yourself with your colleagues! In Marholmen's Masters, you'll practice teamwork and bond as a team, and it will be a talking point for a long time to come. The activity takes place outdoors on Strömsholmen when the weather permits. In case of cold or rain, we'll have just as much fun in our activity basement.

  • Boat Orienteering

Get to know the islet around Marholmen and set sail on a breathtaking adventure! As a team, you'll collect clues at buoys and solve the riddle under time pressure. May the best team win!

  • Yoga Walk About with Forest Bathing

Take the whole group out for a wonderful, guided yoga walk with Forest Bathing on the island to recharge your energy levels, spark creativity – and invigorate your spirits.

  • Half Past Seven at Marholmen

Our Dinner box is a cooking activity consisting of a three-course dinner prepared by our chefs, which you finish together and enjoy in your cabin or villa. It's suitable for groups of up to 6 people. If you book Villa Berg, you can do the activity for up to 14 people.

  • Escape Box

Does your team work well together under pressure? With this activity, you'll strengthen and build your team's cohesion while solving an advanced spy hunt as secret agents. It's super fun!

  • Play adventure golf

Adventure golf is an activity that suits everyone – from colleagues who are already pros to those who've never even held a golf club. Everyone gets challenged on our course! The tournament wraps up with a prize ceremony.

  • Enjoy a conference lunch cooked over an open fire.

Even the conference lunch can be an experience here! Gathering around an open fire to cook and eat together is in our DNA, and it sets the stage for creative conversations.

  • Spa stay

Treat your team to a relaxing time at Mareld Spa after a long day of productive meetings. Here you'll find a hot tub, a dry sauna with views of the bay, and a steam sauna where stars twinkle on the ceiling.

  • Challenge each other to boule

It only takes a few minutes to learn how to play boule, but they say it takes years to master all the tactical and technical tricks. Boule is a sport that's getting more and more popular.

  • Carpet curling

Challenge your colleagues to carpet curling in the historic Grosshandlargården building. This activity is perfect for those who have a little time but want to do something fun together.

  • Go on a kayak tour

Rent kayaks and enjoy a nature experience on the lake. Instructors can join you if you like, and life vests are, of course, included.

  • Fishing with a guide and equipment

Book a half-day, full-day, or after-work trip on the lake! You'll be taken on an exciting fishing trip on fully equipped sport fishing boats with a professional fishing guide and all the necessary equipment.

  • Ping Pong tournament in the Boathouse

In Marholmen's boathouse, located below the hotel, icy winds whistle through the walls. But with heating from the ceiling, your hat on, and a ping-pong racket in hand, you can play a truly unusual game of ping-pong here.

  • Badholmen with its own hot tub

On Badholmen, you'll find two hot tubs, a private sandy beach, and a sauna that you can rent for your whole group for two hours. You can also order snacks and drinks for a magical time on this private headland.

  • Music quiz

A music quiz with a troubadour is an activity that builds team spirit, brings lots of laughs, and suits groups of all types and sizes. It's a perfect way to end the day or a great mood-boosting party starter.

  • Cold Bath with Sauna

Challenge yourselves to a refreshing cold Bath followed by a sauna, which is great for both body and soul. You rent the entire Badholmen for private use. Enhance the experience with drinks and snacks.

Remember! Choose activities for your kickoff that reflect your purpose and goals. If the goal is to get to know each other, consider some type of team-building exercise, like cooking together. And don't arrange a half-day of rock climbing if there are people in the group with physical limitations or disabilities. Also, don't choose a quiz about Swedish pop songs during dinner if some of your colleagues didn't grow up in Sweden.

Seven tips for a successful company Christmas party

It's mid-July as this is being written, but soon enough we'll be right in the middle of the Christmas party high season, which is already getting booked up. For most, the company's festive gathering before the holidays is just fun. But for some, the worry of knowing who to talk to or what behavior to accept can create stress before the party.

Here are seven tips to make this year's Christmas party safer and more fun for both you and your colleagues.

1. Talk about something other than work
Break the pattern and talk about something other than what you do day-to-day. After all, the Christmas party is a social occasion where the focus should be exactly that. Not sure what to say? Ask questions! Most people love talking about themselves.

2. Dare to broaden your horizons
Don't just talk to colleagues you already know. Chat with everyone a bit. It's nice to get to know new people, and it also doesn't hurt to have good relationships with colleagues in departments you don't usually work with.

3. Skip the negative talk
Avoid gossiping, complaining about your boss, or whining about a difficult client. If someone is still gossiping, ask them to take it up with the person involved and say, 'This sounds important, but it doesn't really concern me. I would have talked to XX about it instead.'

4. Address inappropriate jokes and comments
If you're subjected to inappropriate comments or jokes, or see someone else being subjected to them, it's important to speak up, even if it feels difficult. One way to do this without being rude is to address the behavior while still respecting the person. For example: 'When you say that, it sounds sexist, and that feels strange because you're not sexist. You'd benefit from not making such jokes in the future.'

5. Take a break from your phone
Give your attention to the people around you instead of your smartphone. Be present and get to know the others at the Christmas party, rather than just documenting it. And if you plan to post anything on social media, wait until after the event and ask for approval from those in the pictures.

6. If you're a boss – be a role model!
As a boss, remember that your employees look to you to see how they should behave. This applies both to your own conduct and the behavior you accept from others. If you know someone is at risk of behaving inappropriately, have a quick chat with them before the party.

And finally, don't forget to have fun!

At Marholmen, you can book a Christmas party in your own historic venue for 30-80 people. Contact us for our Christmas party packages.

A big thank you to the rhetoric agency Snacka Snyggt for tips 2-7, which were first published in an article in Svenska Möten's magazine in autumn 2019.

Our new brand is part of a bigger plan to develop the island and really put Marholmen on the map as a year-round destination. We've partnered with architectural firm Krook & Tjäder and Tinktur to develop the concept and brand.

Patrik Johansson is the new hotel manager at Marholmen

Marholmen is now taking Marholmen step toward putting this small island in Roslagen on the map. “Together, we will Marholmen Sweden’s most obvious year-round Marholmen ,” says Patrik Johansson, who has taken over as the new hotel manager.

Marholmen in the Roslagen archipelago, just outside Norrtälje, and offers a wide range of activities year-round. The 34-hectare island features a hotel, cottages, historic villas, glamping, conference facilities, a spa, a restaurant, campsites, banquet halls, hot tubs, a sauna, and docks.

“I am incredibly pleased to have been entrusted with this role and look forward to driving Marholmen development Marholmen together with all employees and a management team with solid experience in the industry,” says Patrik Johansson, hotel manager at Marholmen.

Throughout history, people have come to Marholmen relax and unwind. In 1913, Nils and Hanna Berg donated part of Marholmen the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO) to provide working-class wives and female workers with a place to rest. Today, Marholmen is owned and managed Marholmen the Swedish Municipal Workers’ Union.

Even as a child back home in Finland, Patrik dreamed of becoming a hotel manager, and after several years in the restaurant industry, he began studying Hotel Management at the Frans Schartaus Business School in Stockholm. Since then, Patrik has worked as Front Office Manager at the Grand Hotel Saltsjöbaden, where he was also responsible for Revenue Management.

“Given all the unique things Marholmen to offer its guests, I didn’t hesitate for a second when I was asked to join this exciting journey. The kitchen and cooking will always be close to my heart, but the hotel is where I belong. Now it’s as if I’m getting the best of both worlds,” Patrik concludes.

How to arrange a successful kickoff for your company!

Right after the holidays, it's peak season for kick-offs. And with the right planning, it can become a lifelong memory for your participants. Here, our marketing manager Bibi Rydbacken shares her best tips on how to arrange a successful kickoff in Stockholm.

1. Have a clear purpose and goal.
What should the final result be? Communicate it clearly to the participants so everyone knows what's expected.

2. Choose the location, environment, and setting carefully.
The location for the kick-off is important as it sets the tone and atmosphere. A change of scenery promotes creativity, and getting away from the office helps you relax, focus on the present, and not have to worry about what to cook for dinner.

3. Keep your meeting engaging.
Get participants involved right from the start. Nobody enjoys a one-way communication with a long PowerPoint presentation from the boss. Instead, engage them, for example, by giving them a small task to prepare for the kickoff, like a short presentation on something related to the kickoff's goal.

4. Choose activities carefully.
Pick activities that match the kickoff's purpose and goals. If the aim is for a group of colleagues to get to know each other, the activity should be a team-building exercise, like Marholmen's Masters or Boat Orienteering. If the group is already tight-knit, the activity can be more challenging, such as a problem-solving game like Escape Box.

Please note! Remember that all participants should be able to take part in the activity. So, don't plan a half-day of rock climbing or rodeo riding if anyone in the group has physical limitations or disabilities. And don't pick a quiz about Swedish pop songs for dinner entertainment if some of your colleagues didn't grow up in Sweden.

5. Plan plenty of time in the agenda.
The intentions are good, but often the agenda for a kickoff or multi-day conference ends up being quite packed. Make sure to schedule time for participants to work out, visit the spa, FaceTime their family, or simply recharge their batteries, either alone or with colleagues, for a bit between the day's activities and dinner.

6. Follow up!
Finally, it's important to follow up on the kickoff to see if its purpose and goals were achieved. What can we do even better next year?

We hope these tips help you plan a kickoff that your participants will remember forever.

New CEO at Marholmen

Marholmen is now taking the next step to put this small island in Roslagen on the map as Sweden's next big year-round destination. “I'm really looking forward to further developing Marholmen to its full potential together with our employees and owners,” says Fredrik Utheim, who took over as the new CEO after the turn of the year.

Marholmen is located in the Roslagen archipelago, just outside Norrtälje. On the 93-hectare island, you'll find a hotel, cottages, villas, glamping, conference facilities, a spa, a restaurant, motorhome pitches, party venues, hot tubs, a sauna, jetties, and its own sandy beach. Activities for both private and conference guests all year round include adventure golf, a multi-sport court, a decathlon, Walking gym, Forest Bathing, cold baths, barbecue areas, an agility course, and playgrounds.

– I see enormous potential to truly put Marholmen on the map as a completely unique and sustainable year-round destination for visitors, says Fredrik Utheim. All the conditions are already in place, and when the offer came, I couldn't say no to the challenge of leading its continued development.

Throughout history, people have come to Marholmen for relaxation and recreation. In 1913, Nils and Hanna Berg donated a part of Marholmen to the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO) to give working wives and female laborers a chance to rest. This is a tradition that is still managed today by the owner, the Swedish Municipal Workers' Union.

Marholmen's Chairman of the Board, Johan Hessius, comments on the continued investment: "The owner and the board see great potential in Kommunal's continued ownership of Marholmen. We wish Fredrik and his team good luck and look forward to following their journey closely."

– Now we will build on the opportunity that the previous management laid the groundwork for. The vision is clear. Within five years, we aim to be Sweden's next big year-round destination, Fredrik concludes.
